I think that photo was taken at North Luffenham on the 22/23 May 1971. If the race number is ECS9, then the rider is Roger Barnes 498cc Triumph. I'm sure other far knowledgeble people than myself can tell if that is a Triumph lump or not.

Obviously, the bike on the far side is Pegasus.

Really Jerry!

Haven't a clue about the second photo but I 'm pretty certain that the top photo is Des Heckle and his 247cc AJS Starmaker. There weren't/aren't too many bikes around that are that low to the ground. Incidentally Nick, I don't think the photo of Des is from 1967 as the SPR pits didn't have any markings until they were relocated in 1968.

thanks Clive, both pics must be 1970 then, and I've just found Des Heckle on a 1970 programme with a 109 race number so that comfirms what you say... :D

just need to ID the other one now.. looks a bit like a car engine to me???

That Villiers of Des Heckle ran an 11sec 1/4! He also ran 12.5 on a 125 Rotax single that was even smaller. The guy was a genius at riding small 2-strokes.

Just been going through my 1970 programmes, and I think the only car engined bike running was Tony Bartram with Impala, an 875cc Rootes (Chrysler) lump.

CRR it's not Tony Bartram's his was purpose built race bike, this one is a road bike, I'm sure there's another shot of it on the forum
